Amniotic Stem Cell & Platelet Rich Plasma Procedures

for Foot & Ankle Conditions

Regenerative medicine is an emerging branch of medicine with the goal of restoring organ and/or tissue function for patients with serious injuries or chronic disease in which the bodies own responses are not sufficient enough to restore functional tissue. A growing crisis in organ transplantation and an aging population have driven a search for new and alternative therapies. There are approximately 90,000 patients in the US transplant-waiting list. In addition there are a wide array of major unmet medical needs which might be addressed by regenerative technologies.

New and current Regenerative Medicines can use stem cells and amniotic membrane, in the form of grafts or injections, to create living and functional tissues to regenerate and repair tissue and organs in the body that are damaged due to age, disease and congenital defects. Stem cells have the power to go to these damaged areas and regenerate new cells and tissues by performing a repair and a renewal process, restoring functionality. Regenerative medicine has the potential to provide a cure to failing or impaired tissues.

Amniotic Stem Cell & Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Procedures are the world’s most advanced regenerative injection treatments for treating foot and ankle conditions. Before you consider ankle surgery, fusion or replacement, consider these stem cell, amniotic, and PRP injection treatments.

Current surgical treatment options for common injuries and arthritis, include ankle arthroscopy to “clean up” damaged cartilage, fusion of ankle bones where cartilage has been lost, and tendon grafts screwed in place to strengthen loose connections between bones. All are painful and may not be effective in the long run. These surgeries typically involve a painful post surgical recovery with a lengthy rehab period to restore strength and mobility to the foot and ankle.

Stem Cells

Adult stem cells are cells from your own body that can renew themselves and turn into other cells (differentiate). They live inside all of us in various tissues, poised to leap into action to repair damage as it occurs. As we age or have big injuries, we may not be able to recruit enough of these cells to the site to fully repair the area. Stem Cell Procedures help overcome this problem by extracting stem cells from an area of high volume, then concentrating the cells and re-injecting them into the damaged area to help the body heal naturally.

Stem Cell Procedures can be used for a wide range of conditions and are the tool of choice for injuries, arthritis and other conditions that may be more significant than what may be treated with Platelet Rich Plasma Procedures.

Amniotic Injections

Amniotic injections or grafts are materials derived from human donated placenta tissue from healthy mothers delivering healthy babies. They are rich in naturally occurring growth factors that help signal your body to begin the healing process and regenerate new healthy tissue where there is disease. The amniotic membranes are collected and processed in such a manner to produce a safe and effective membrane used as a graft that can be used to wrap or cover damaged soft tissues or wounds, such as tendons or ligaments or diabetic foot wounds. Some amniotic products may contain a small amount of stem cells which can help play a role in the regenerative process.

Amniotic injections are processed as a fluid form of these membranes that can be injected into joints or body tissue to enhance healing of the damaged tissue. They are often used in joint injections for Achilles tendon injuries, arthritis, DJD (degenerative joint disease), heel spurs, muscle strains, plantar fasciitis, sprains, ligament injuries, tendinitis, tendinosis, tendonitis, tendinopathy, tendon tears, and wounds.

Amniotic injections are currently covered by Medicare and secondary insurances in Florida. Pre-authorization is usually necessary before the procedure. Doctor Pero and his staff perform amniotic injections usually under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance to ensure precision in the delivery of amniotic therapy. They are frequently and successfully used for therapy for heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and heel spurs.

PRP

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections contain healing growth components from your own blood that increase your body’s natural ability to repair itself. The use of PRP to repair joint, tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries is becoming well known, thanks to exposure from professional athletes. Platelet injection treatments are effective because they have a stimulating effect on the stem cells within the targeted area, making those stem cells work harder to heal damaged tissues. Platelet procedures are commonly used for soft tissue injuries, mild arthritis and spine conditions.

Doctor Pero has experience as a clinical laboratory scientist and is a nationally certified Medical Technologist through the American Society for Clinical Pathology. He has 30 years of experience studying, transfusing, and working with platelets. He currently performs PRP injections in his office which has a CLIA licensed laboratory where the platelets are harvested from your own body through a simple blood draw, and then concentrated into a platelet-rich plasma, before being injected. The entire process takes less than an hour.

Ankle Ligament Tears, Sprains and Instability of the Ankle Joint

When the ligaments that hold the bones of the ankle joint together are partially torn or stretched, as in the case of a bad sprain or repeated minor sprains, they can become painful, loose, and weak. This changes how you walk, putting painful stress on other joints of the foot, as well as making it more likely that you will sprain the ankle again. This leads to a cycle of chronic pain and instability.

Ankle sprains and injuries that are not too severe, may be resolved with concentrated PRP (platelet rich plasma) procedures. These procedures are intended to help heal damaged tissues and tighten lax ligaments due to sprain. For more substantial injuries and tears, our stem cell protocol may be recommended.

Considering Foot & Ankle Surgery, Fusion, or Joint Replacement?

Osteoarthritis of the ankle usually occurs in ankles that have experienced trauma, infection, or injury. A smooth, slippery, fibrous connective tissue, called articular cartilage, acts as a protective cushion between bones. Arthritis develops as the cartilage begins to deteriorate or is lost. As the articular cartilage is lost, the joint space between the bones narrows. This is an early symptom of osteoarthritis of the ankle and is easily seen on X-rays.

As the disease progresses, the cartilage thins, becoming grooved and fragmented. The surrounding bones react by becoming thicker. They start to grow outward and form spurs. The synovium (a membrane that produces a thick fluid that helps nourish the cartilage and keep it slippery) becomes inflamed and thickened. It may produce extra fluid, which causes additional swelling.

As an alternative to surgery, fusion or replacement, Amniotic Injection, Stem Cell and PRP Injection procedures may help alleviate pain with a non-surgical injection procedure. Patients are often encouraged to walk the same day, and most experience little to no down time from the procedure. Sometimes these injections are also performed after a minimally-invasive procedure such as an ankle arthroscopy, or a Tenex procedure for plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis.
